Basic Intro to the PeloponneseThe Pelopponese is the southernmost part of Greece. Almost an island, its 'fingers' reach out into the Aegean Sea. It is linked to mainland Greece by the isthmus at Corinth and the Rio Antirio Bridge. An area of outstanding natural beauty; of majestic mountains and tiny villages clinging to mountainsides it is also of immense historical significance. Mycenae, in the north east of the region, gave its name to the early civilisation and dominated this region. It contained several exceedingly powerful city-states, including Sparta, Corinth, Argos and Megalopolis. Fierce battles were fought on this peninsula most notably the Peloponnesian War in the 5th centry BC. When the region fell to Roman expansion it became known as the province of Achaea. Like much of Greece it suffered the up and downs of invasion and conquest parts being ruled by the Byzantine Empire, Venetians, Franks, the Ottoman Empire, the Greek War of Independence in the early 19th century and, finally, World War ll and the Greek Civil War in the 20th century.. The most significant modern cities of the Peloponnese are, Kalamata, Patras, Corinth, Pyrgos, Tripoli, Argos, Aigion and Sparta. The most important historic sites are Bassae with the temple of Epikourios Apollo; Epidaurus, Corinth, Monemvasia, Messene, Mistra, Olympia where the Olympic Games were founded; Mycenae with the tomb of Agamemnon and the fabulous Lion Gate; Tegea, Tiryns and the palace of Nestor at Pylos. As if all this wasn't enough to tempt the traveller to visit the region there are beautiful sandy beaches on the western shores of the Peloponnese where the days can be passed in relaxation enjoying sand, sea and sunshine. Still thinking of water, just south of Olympia the visitor will find Lake Kaiafa where, with its spectacular mountain and woodland scenery and views towards distant Zakynthos and Cephalonia, it is the perfect spot for year-round water sports.
